Missouri’s Department of Conservation recently purchased a TimberKing 2000 Sawmill. We wanted to know how they planned to put it to work. We called Mike Morris, Forest Products Supervisor at the Missouri State Offices, and got the inside story…

“Missouri is an interesting and diverse state. We have everything from rural to urban environments, everything from hardwood forests to prairies, transition areas, rolling hills, to the rugged Ozark Mountains along the Ozark River. Forest products are a $9 billion-dollar industry in Missouri! That’s a major part of our state’s industry. And it’s been well demonstrated that if people are interested in utilizing logs for their own projects or as a business endeavor, a sawmill can be a very good investment.

As you’ll see on our website, our mission as a State Agency is ‘to protect and manage the fish, forest, and wildlife resources of the state, and to facilitate and provide the opportunity for all citizens to use, enjoy, and learn about these resources.’
Public demonstrations & education
That’s why we purchased the TimberKing 2000 sawmill — to demonstrate to the general public how to go from wood to wood products. We use the TimberKing to show people how to utilize timber, with a special emphasis on urban wood utilization.
We’re raising awareness of timber utilization with the TimberKing. We use it to train our internal staff on an ongoing basis, then we put on public demonstrations of timber utilization. Other state agencies have sawmills, too. Our neighbor, Kansas, has one and we recently did an urban wood utilization demo in conjunction with them.
We put the word out on our events using all kinds of media from social media to newspaper, local contacts, newspaper, industry contacts, and on our website.
